What're your housing situations like in Guatemala? House, tents, dorm style, or something else?

My list always includes bags of chocolate, because I can't get good chocolate in the Middle of Nowhere. Also a silk sleepsheet, which makes life like nine times more comfortable!

I think they're putting us up in a hotel for the first week, then we'll be living with host families after that. Cement block houses, type of thing. And I must remember to bring some chocolate. That shit is essential.

My travel-to-stay-somewhere lists are always like 50% comfort -- half of my suitcase will be clothes and tools and toiletries, and the other half will be chocolate and luna bars (vegetarian travel protein issues!) and silk sleepsheet and books. Because I can live with just the clothes and toiletries, but I would be a very cranky person without the chocolate!

Oh, though, I don't know if this will be a problem for you, but I have stayed in places where nobody sells tampons. Which isn't a problem for me anymore -- I <3 my diva cup -- but it catches folks every time. (We get a forty-page information packet with stuff about, like, taxis and good hotels on the way and airlines and dorm living and meal options and the impossibility of buying soy-based dairy or meat substitutes, and nowhere in there do they mention "also it's really hard to find tampons here.")

I was shocked to discover that our packet actually covered it this time! We've all been gently persuaded not to try and buy feminine products at all, because of modesty issues. I swear, our packet has one paragraph of "here's how you get from the airport to halfway across the freaking country" and ten pages of "here are all the immoral things that we will potentially throw you out of the program for doing." (Not that we would get thrown out for buying tampons, but we would probably get stared at.)
