Title: De la Paix
Summary: AU. Antonin, Bellatrix, and baby's first Christmas Eve together.
Fandom: Harry Potter
Word Count: 555
Rating/Warnings: PG
Pairing: Antonin/Bellatrix
A/N: This is an AU, based off an RPG- ack, too many letters. This is a continuation/conclusion (?) of a storyline which was going on at [livejournal.com profile] diagonally before the Troubles. Antonin Dolohov is a paltry estimation of [livejournal.com profile] clarior’s characterization, and I hope she forgives me. Anyway, this is sort of a Christmas present for her. Enjoy. Or, alternately, don't.

The fire roars happily. Perhaps somebody’s told it that it’s Christmas. The scene is idyllic, quiet, peaceful. A nervous peace, like the night before a battle, or the calm before the storm.

The baby makes a little sound. Bellatrix smiles so widely that she feels her face may break. She pushes from her mind one more time that this baby’s not hers, that her Lord will be waiting at the New Year for his heir. She’s all but forgotten her moldering husband’s last words- a curse on her daughter’s head that went through her like a dagger. Later, she will drink and drink, sob and sob and it will still feel as if they will never leave; but for now, they are gone from her mind.

Antonin leans down and fingers the baby’s soft hair. His mind isn’t on a little cottage covered in snow where he knows Aldous will be waiting impatiently for him in the morning. Bella always sleeps too late; he’ll be in and out before she rises. He almost cancelled, but he tore up the owl at the last second. He kisses Bella on the neck and takes the now sleeping infant from her arms.

He carries his child into the nursery and gently places her in the bassinet. She awakes and coos at him. Antonin notices for the first time that she has Bella’s eyes. Clear, bright, cold, dangerous eyes. He doesn’t want to think about what the future holds for his child, that she’s already bound away. Her eyes flicker shut again as she nestles down to sleep. He kisses her softly on the head.

Antonin turns, his hand slipping down to a pocket in his robes. He withdraws a little wooden cube no bigger than the palm of his hand, a simple flower carved into its top. Is this how it ends? Or how it begins? He’s not sure. Antonin is sure he’s never been in this deep, not, at least, with anyone but Aldous. But that doesn’t matter to him now.

Bella is staring into the fire when he comes back, wrapped up in a blanket on the sofa. Antonin almost quails when he sees her. But she turns and smiles contentedly at him, and all his fear melts away. He all but falls to his knees in front of her, holding the box out like an offering. Bellatrix inhales sharply, her shoulders tensing automatically. She takes the box, and when her fingers brush the center of the flower, the petals rise and it opens.

Bellatrix knows what this means. Being controlled. A prize. But that’s starting to matter less and less to her. It also means a real life, a real family, a real home. Their own child, no dark promises this time. She falls to her knees with him, grabbing at him and sobbing and kissing him anywhere her lips fall. He takes her hand and slides the ring onto her finger. The reflected fire in the diamond matches the fire in her eyes. She is not a prize. In this moment, she is a victor.

The fire burns down slowly. The baby sleeps, whatever dreams she is lost in happy ones. Antonin and Bellatrix just lie there, wrapped up in each other, completely lost and, for once, completely found.
