IDK if this is too late or not, but I suggest skipping some of the specials, as the companions usually aren't all that awesome, and they tend to be too Christmas-y for my liking (love will solve everything! type of thing).
I suggest you skip: Love and Monsters - very little focus on the Doctor/companions, I think it was the result of an alien-designing contest The Shakespeare Code The Next Doctor - really silly and a complete stand-alone Planet of the Dead - another complete standalone, and sort of boring A Christmas Carol
It's actually hard to pick specific episodes to skip, since there's a lot of tie-in to the general story arc, even if the episode itself is mostly filler.
