Remix Redux! OMG!
May. 23rd, 2010 06:14 pmYou guys, you guys! I has a remix! It is gorgeous! It is:
I'll See It Through (The Texas Two-Step Mix)
It's an expanded, exploded version of You're All I Ever Wanted (But I'm Terrified Of You), but it's more than that. The original is kind of cracky and meta; it plays with preconceived fannish notions (as I like to do) of vampire lore, in an essentially OTT kind of way. The remix takes itself much more seriously, in a way that I really like. It's much slower to unravel, leaving a lot of time for disagreements and character development and all that good stuff.
What I find really interesting is how our characterizations of Rodney are different. Original!Rodney's kind of hedonistic and down on himself and adorably befuddled; remix!Rodney is a hell of a lot more grumpy and presumptuous and weirdly devoted to John at the same time. And what makes Remix great is that they're both perfectly good characterizations, which make their respective stories totally different.
So, like, basically you should read it an hour ago.
Here are more stories what I liked (though I am far from through with all the stuff I want to read):
Of All the Gin Joints in All the World (Rubato Encore Remix) (for
helens78): This story is great. I have such a thing for stories where our boys meet pre-canon (bonus points if they get it on) and meet back up during Rising. I love the original, and the remix is a great expansion of it.
Too Good (the YKIOK,IJNMK remix) (for
crysothemis): For a lot of reasons, I like the original less every time I read it. The remix fixes a lot of issues that I have with it, not least of all that John and Rodney actually communicate like grown-ass people.
Touch (dancing in the moonlight remix) (for
astolat): Here's a story that's nothing like the original at all, but it is really, intensely beautiful. The original and the remix make very lovely companions.
Oh, and I should say: guess my remix, win a prize! Comments are screened for yourpleasure convenience (non-guessing comments I will unscreen). I will tell you that it is 1) in a fandom I have written before 2) not particularly brilliant, but my remixee liked it a lot, which is all that matters.
Yaaaaay Remix!
