Two things come to mind immediately, so here's the chronologically first one: a story about a masochist John in which Rodney's giving him a beating with nettles, iirc, and John's turned on but he thinks to himself that maybe it was almost better before he discovered what excites him, back when he just thought he didn't like sex very much, because he hates feeling like such a hassle.

It rang very true to John for me, and I found it a heartwringing thought for any character to have.

(The other is in The Empty Bowl, John is riding his dom high and wants to just curl up around Rodney and dote on him and Rodney says, "Are you still here? You can go." Arrrgh!)

The lines in "We Are Shaking Shadows" about Rodney being built for pain which is why he runs from it so much is one of the few times that sub!Rodney has made real sense to me.
