Deep breath, everyone.
Oh god, oh god, this movie, oh god. I do agree with someone on facebook that Hulk stole the show. I was already pretty in love with Bruce, right? His movie is really underrated, and Edward Norton is really good in it, but I saw Mark Ruffalo, and I was like, that's Bruce Fucking Banner, right there. I can't imagine anybody else in the role now.
And when he said, "I'm always angry," it was just, like, shot to the heart, this is the essence of this character. That was probably my second favorite line in the entire movie, behind "There's only one God, and he doesn't dress like that," for exactly the same reason- that is that character in one line. And I have a lot of problems with Joss Whedon, but his dialogue was so strong in this movie, much stronger than in some of his original stuff. Like, there are lines in Firefly that could have been said by anyone, but this movie, it was dead fucking on.
The movie was also really well-orchestrated, and there were enough situations where the heroes were in legit danger to keep it interesting. The fact that it was last minute, Hail Mary, self-sacrifice that saved the day worked perfectly, because it emphasized the humanity of the characters. The fact that three of them are basically just ground fighters, human or pretty damn close, helped a lot with this too.
And the idiots who were like, Natasha doesn't deserve to be on the team because she doesn't have powers or weapons- dude, if you've gotta pick one, she was a much bigger badass than her other non-powered buddy there.
I think there could have been a lot more with Hawkeye- like, he was in a lot of the movie and important to it, but he was basically just walking around beating on people. I'm hoping for more character development in the future. But seriously, getting clunked on the head undoes Loki's mojo? I mean, for real, that's such a comic book thing to happen, but I think it should have been lampshaded a little more, because it ended up looking just kind of stupid instead of consciously kind of stupid.
Also, Clint and Natasha, don't care if it's a romance or a bromance, I just love them together, you guys. Them and Phil and Pepper, all the love for the male/female bros in this movie. Also Selviiiiig, I love you so, your little heart.
We had a really good theater, because I suspect it was all people who bought tickets online in advance. There was a whole group of Rule 63 cosplayers! They were quite good, and their Thor tripped me out- their Loki was wearing the symphony costume, so Thor just wore the same costume with a blonde wig and a red stole. I giggled.
The projector was fucked up at the beginning though, which sucked, so I don't really know what happened in about the first five minutes. It did clear up before Loki got into his Mississippi minivan, which is getting written into a story, see if I don't. I feel like the 3D was just really unnecessary. I feel like some of the coolest scenes, where they were all in space and shit, were in the very beginning, which I missed, but the rest of the time, it was just kind of distracting, because I couldn't unsee it. I mean, real effective in Thor, not so great here.
Now, let's talk about the elephant in the room:
PHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIL
Oh god. I am SO, SO glad I was spoiled for that part (though very little else, which was also good), because I legit could not have finished the movie if I hadn't known exactly what was going to happen. Like, y'all, I'm not even playing, I cried for two days straight when I found out. The Erins can attest to and sympathize with this.
I just. I am glad he went out like a hero. And we'd agreed- if there was a mention of LMDs in the movie, then Phil wasn't really dead. And on the way home I was thinking about writing the story about how Phil was never a real person but just a series of LMDs, but then, uh, I realized that I wrote it already. This happens to me kind of a lot. So now I have to write the one where Phil has to go into hiding after his LMD's death. Because it happens, don't act like it doesn't.
And JSYK, the whole thing with him made a song I really like suddenly the saddest ever:
For the who are lazy/busy/don't like good music, this is the last verse:
My heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on a limb
And all I remember is thinking, I wanna be like them
Ever since I was little, ever since I was little
It looked like fun
And it's no coincidence I've come
And I can die when I'm done
From what I understand, though, it was a Marvel exec (Feige, if you want to go shit in his letterbox) that made that call, not Joss. He did interviews about it, and he was kind of like, lol yeah I killed Coulson, thought it'd be a good idea. And I don't think Joss was probably like OMG HOW COULD YOU SAY THAT, but I think in this case, I kind of get the feeling that he knew Joss's reputation and was like, oh yeah, this'll go great with his style. So, idk. It made perfect sense and was really lazy at the same time.
But it did bring out Tony Stark, Good Bro, my favorite Tony Stark, as many people can tell you.
So. Avengers. Pretty great. Need to see it, uh, like at least two more times to confirm this.

Date: 2012-05-04 06:16 pm (UTC)I grinned like a loon (or like even more of a loon) at the LMD line because yeah, handy trapdoor, snuck into a scene with Phil in it? Tidy. But personally I'm inclined to believe/hope that it was the real Phil who died, but that the SHIELD EMT people were able to revive him in time and that Maria knows and has mixed feelings about Fury's choice to lie to the fancypantsier heroes.
Also, Natashaaaaaaaaa <3 I spent a good chunk of the movie muttering to my companion about how they're all my favourite favourites, but she and Bruce definitely stole the show. Best Hulk ever, for sure. I also have ~thoughts~ about Phil's "cellist" and his besties relationship with Pepper, and I'm sure I'm not the only one to think of this, but I kind of want to save articulating them for a fic rather than sharing my "brilliance" willy-nilly.

Date: 2012-05-05 11:02 pm (UTC)OMG, what a GRATE movie! Eeeeeeeeee! I saw it this morning with a norm crowd, and it was still cool. (Boo you people, clap when something cool happens :P) TONY STARK HAS HIS OWN SOUND TRACK. LISTEN, IT'S ON THE PA. :D
RE: Clint - I was out of the theater for the 3.2 seconds he and BW were having characterization, I thought I was missing out on some insight into their characters... but I guess not?
