So this is about why I love Phil and Clint both more after the movie, and why I am even more convinced they would be good together even though they never speak. You might want to get some snacks. We're going to be here a while.
MOVIE SPOILERS. I WILL BE SPOILING THE MOVIE. THE MOVIE WILL BE SPOILED.
Let me make the caveat here at the beginning that I am discounting EVERYTHING related to comics canon. When I still read comics, I was a DC; if it's Marvel comics and it doesn't have Deadpool, Doctor Strange, or the X-Men in it, I don't know anything about it. This is a movie-only argument about movie characters. That's it.
So, Clint first, because we didn't even really know Clint before.
God, Clint is so fucking smart and so completely direct. From the beginning of the movie, man, everybody- including friggin Selvig and Nick Fury- is like "UNLIMITED POWER FOR FREE FROM SPACE :D :D :D" and Clint is like, "But, but, like, what part of space? Who's on the other side of The Scary Door? Does nobody else wonder about this? Because I wonder about this." And Fury is just like, ::boggle::.
And then in the final battle, he's calling shots and strategy for Tony Stark and Jarvis. Among other things, Jarvis is a strategy computer. Yeah, Jarvis has a real different perspective on it than Clint does from his nest, but Tony could just fly up and get the lay of the land and that would be it. He doesn't need to, because he's got human eyes that good already doing it for him.
And also, Clint has ~emotions~. He's been entirely mindfucked by Loki, and he's out of it for about five minutes before he's quietly helping Natasha- and I'd like to just point out to you that Natasha is the one who says that love is for children, not Clint. Whether or not he agrees with her is an open question. Loki doesn't say anything about it. He doesn't act like he remembers that she's in the red with him; he just acts like he cares.
(I am not nearly the first person with this idea, but I really want fic where Clint is quietly gay and he and Natasha are best friends for life. Like, they're really protective of each other and they cuddle sometimes, but it's totally in a platonic kind of way, because they just love each other a lot, even if Natasha can't bring herself to admit it.
As an extension of that, I also want to see the C/C story where this is going on and Phil is Jealous of Natasha because he doesn't quite get it yet and Natasha Disapproves because Phil is not good enough for her baby, but everything works out in the end and Natasha and Phil become bros too, and they are all happy together (as happy as happiness really can be when Natasha is involved, she's Russian) and nobody feels like a third wheel.
Then maybe they have a threesome. Who can say?)
And let us discuss Phil for a moment, and why I love him even more now:
The earliest telling moment in the film, for me, is when they're evacuating the SHIELD base. There are orders to get everybody and Phase 2 out, but the second these two orders conflict, he's like fuck Phase 2, leave the guntake the cannoli, get yourselves to safety. Caveat: they look like Phase 2 crates to me, can't remember 100%, but it still stands for any kind of equipment- we can build new shit but we can't rebuild you, so get out of here.
And that's Phil. Phil doesn't jump on the grenade, but he jumps in front of the people who can't get to safety. He filed a report on the grenade yesterday, but even if you didn't read it, he's still got your back.
There's a tendency to write him as robotic (or, y'know, as a robot, guilty as charged). That's a load of bullshit. People who say he doesn't show emotions can't understand subtle acting (in some cases, not even real subtle acting). He's a fanboy and a badass and when it needs to happen, he lays down his life. And don't forget, when he shows up (let's bar the idea that he didn't die for a second), he's not about to go toe to toe with Loki to make a grand statement. Phil does not step into that situation intending to die. Phil steps in with the intention of saving Thor.
Yeah, Fury's the one who sent him to the detention section to lock it down, but even if Fury sent him there expecting him to die, Phil didn't know. He put his life on the line for his friend and he lost it. And in his final moments of clarity, he realized that he didn't die in vain. We should all be so lucky.
I made myself cry a little. Break there for a second.
Okay, back.
And despite the fact that they never actually speak to each other (kind of good, because they have a near-miss just before Phil dies, and JFC that could have gone HORRIBLY), I think their character traits could come together in such a way that they could have a successful, mature, adult relationship, as long as they can deal with the fact that, y'know, they work for SHIELD. They've got their emotional shit together, they've got the same sense of humor, they're generally inured to the day to day what-the-fuckery of SHIELD. They've been known to risk their lives doing some stupid shit, but you've gotta do what you gotta do, and none of it endangered anybody else (any more than they already were in danger). They're good dudes, and they'd be good together. That's it.
Look, I have come through some fandoms, man. Two (or three) people who are fucked up being able to find happiness together is one of my favorite narratives (you will notice looking at what I've written). I make no apologies for that, and it definitely influences how I feel about these characters. But this is something different, to my mind- this is that with the legwork cut out, where people can just be happy- or as happy as you can be at SHIELD.
And if the only price I've gotta pay is half the pairing being dead, well, I will go down with this ship, son.
