I use Papers to keep track of journal articles, then have it generate a BibTeX file.

I suspect this is a physical sciences thing. (Except I don't think geologists use it as much; maybe 'anyone who uses LaTeX instead of Word for paper-writing, which usually is people who have to use a lot of equations')
