Now that tumblr is done, I am going to mirror various things here, starting with my author's notes for when the moon is round and full:

My and blackglass’s pod_together collaboration is finally up!! And I have a lot of things to say about it, so read on if you’re interested. This contains spoilers for the story, so I strongly recommend listening to/reading the fic first.

So first off, this story is more than usually related to TV on the Radio, specifically Wolf Like Me. I rec the podfic with music; it doesn’t overlap the words and the Lera Lynn cover of said song that blackglass chose is *kisses fingertips*

The project was collaborative from the start; I picked the pairing, and blackglass picked the subject matter. She suggested shifters and/or romance. I’ve never written werecreatures before, if you can believe it, because they’re not really my thing. But this was pod_together, and for it I like to do things out of my comfort zone that will sound cool recorded.

This story started life veeeery different. Nothing remains of the original but the first wolf section and Vex confronting Percy. The original was a mostly canon-compliant slow burn romance with the reveal coming near the end and Vex taming the wolf. The story as it stands was going to be glossed in 5 paragraphs at the end.

As I started writing, I realized that those five paragraphs were way more interesting than a spot-the-shifter story. I realized I wanted to write a werewolf story I had never read before. I’ve been thinking about writing stories because no one else could tell them, which is a lofty goal but not an insurmountable one, and I’m incorporating that into how write. So I scrapped the early canon romance and the slow burn for an established relationship at the closing of Campaign 1.

After that, the story plotwise kind of ran its own course. Originally Vex was going to get the upper hand and tame the wolf, but it wasn’t as interesting as them coming together as hunters and building trust. I’m not really going to belabor how I differentiated Percy and the wolf, because it’s pretty obvious. I think the only thing that’s subtle is that the wolf’s narration gets more eloquent when Vex is using Speak With Animals; though neither Vex nor the wolf realize it, the spell gives the wolf a spark of humanity rather than making Vex more animal. Also, another interesting thing to point out is that the wolf refers to Trinket as “he” and himself as “it”, because Trinket borders on human.

I would like to talk instead about blackglass’s performance and how she differentiated Percy and the wolf, because it’s more interesting. I really appreciate the way her voice goes gruff for the wolf passages. I didn’t give her direction on that; I crafted the passages in a specific way that I felt would be interesting read aloud, then turned her loose on them to do what she would. I love the way it turned out, which was even better than I hoped.

So that is a lot of words about this story/podfic, which I’m very proud of my part in. And now perhaps I will listen to it again…
